AREA’s Alternative Technologies department plans, designs, develops and promotes alternative technologies to reduce the pressure on the non-renewable sources of energy in Afghanistan.

Technologies promoted include solar cookers, solar water heaters, photovoltaic modules, wind pumps and biogas systems. The department established a metal works factory in Herat in 1997 and is in the process of establishing an Alternative Technologies Center in Kabul.

AREA also delivers environment protection projects, such as the conservation of the Kol-e-Hashmat Khan wetland in Kabul with UNDP, and community based climate resilience work with OXFAM.
