Our History

AREA was established in December 1993 as the continuation of the GTZ DESP project. AREA is a non-governmental, non-political, not-for-profit developmental organization.

AREA CBMAP was established in 1995 and is sufficiently experienced in organizing communities to handle their own mine and explosive remnant of war (ERW) problems themselves. The concept of working community based mine action within AREA is to ensure a link of the community based demining operations with AREA’s development interventions.

The CBMAP vision is to save lives and limbs and improve the livelihood of the Afghan people, conducive to development interventions. The CBMAP mission is to contribute to the humanitarian mine action programme and to make land safe from the threat of land mines and ERW for productive use, promoting livelihoods, safety and security.

The Alternative Technologies department established a metal works factory in Herat in 1997 and is responsible for planning, designing, developing and promoting alternative technologies to reduce pressure on the non-renewable sources of energy in the country.
